Gabrielle Hawkes
As a painter, I am self taught. I see myself as a story-teller, living in two interconnecting worlds, Cornwall and my imagination.
My paintings depict my lifelong adventures in the country of the psyche, a magical place of forests, lakes, islands, ancient stones and secret hidden places, where things are not always what they seem and animals and humans communicate. I am always surprised by what emerges when I start to paint and I often allow randomly applied paint to dictate the subject matter. This way I meet up with new characters and am led to new places.
I exhibit my work at my studio in St. Just The Turn of the Tide, which I share with my partner, painter Tom Henderson Smith. I also show regularly with the St. Ives Society of Artists, St. Ives and with Penwith Printmakers at different locations around Cornwall and further afield.
