Christian May
I was born in South Woodford in 1961. I am the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. I was brought up in Hainault, on a council estate in the London borough of Redbridge, and the borders of Essex.
I have had no formal art training, and started to paint when I was sixteen when my Father bought me some oil paints for my birthday. Over the years I have tried all kinds of methods and mediums of painting and screen printing, and have sold to many people including the snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, and cast members of Eastenders. I have sold my work in the Arches of Camden Market, and at various other places in London (Spittlefield Market and H210 in the Blue Water Shopping Centre) and also in Santa Barbara in California.
Having a naturally naive style allows me to be myself and not pretend or try something I am not. It is honest - and flows better - and is infinitely satisfying. I get inspiration from many songs including those of the Beatles from the sixties and one of my favourites of theirs is "Penny Lane".
All my work is based on observations and happy and amusing memories, with - I hope - a distinct British edge. I hope that they bring a feeling of warmth and comfort to those who view them.
When I paint I strive to be avble to capture the essence, the energy and the atmosphere of the subject.
