Association of British Naive Artist - ABNA

Marie Shrigley

I was born in Liverpool. the people were very friendly, always ready to do a good turn. In the war I was evacuated to north Wales. I left school at fourteen and became a trainee window dresser.
I married in 1954, and have three children. My husbands job.in design and development took us to various countries, including Australia and South Africa. I have always wanted to paint, but lacked the confidance. My husband encouraged me to try. But I did'nt like the naive results. I tried an art course, but it made me so stressed, I became ill.
The Mister Denham article encouraged me to carry on in my own style. I now live in north Wales, which to me is a magical land. The pictures I paint are scenes that have inspired me, but they are part imaginry. My grandfather came from Wales so I have an infinity with the land.
